Nicky Birch is Innovation Lead for the BBC’s Generative AI Programme, working with editorial teams across the organisation to pilot practical, responsible uses of AI in audio—from synthetic translation to reformatting and accessibility. She brings hands-on production experience to AI workflows and governance. Recent BBC pilots have explored personalised football bulletins, translating live text pages, and enabling tools that help producers navigate thousands of hours of audio more easily. Previously Nicky ran the innovation team in BBC Sounds, led on interactive audio and voice projects for BBC R&D and spent 14 years in independent radio production at Somethin' Else. Outside the BBC, Nicky edits the fortnightly books podcast Backlisted.
