Aslak Gottlieb is a Danish researcher, project developer and debater. Since 2009 he has been working with projects relating youth, journalism, the media and education. He strives at getting young people to take part in the democracy they will inherit from us, the democracy they must help maintain to ensure its survival. As a journalistic fellow at Southern University of Denmark in 2015, he revised the traditional news criteria used by Danish news media into a list of what he defined as Engagement Criteria, serving as a tool to reach younger audiences with news. Based on this work he is still affiliated at the university as part of an European consortia of media organizations developing a newsgame to engage young adults in current affairs and journalism.
Young people consume a lot of news, but are less concerned with who produced them, and the source from which they came. Also, their understanding of what is important is very different to that of an older media user. To this segment, social media plays an essential role in the daily news update. Not surprisingly, traditional media struggles to engage young audiences with news content. To learn more about this, we have invited 3 young Czechs on stage to tell us what type of news they prefer in their feed, and how. Or more precisely, how can we learn to engage the younger audiences in our news content?
