After nearly 20 years on the air, Christian has a few tips for presenters… If you’re a broadcaster, what’s the most important thing? Don’t sit back and don’t stop taking chances. The thing that kills most shows (in fact, most creative things) is when you stop working on your act. ‘You are never finished and you should never give up trying to improve’. It’s ok to make mistakes, and Christian O’Connell has made a few in his time. OC thinks that the trick is to be honest about them and talk to your audience about it. ‘We’re all human’ said Christian. He doesn’t subscribe to the school of thought that should hide when you make a mistake. He also believes that you need to fail in order to succeed. Take risks and don’t stress about failing. ‘Even say to your audience you’re about to take a risk’. They are much more likely to turn the radio up and see what happens next. Christian believes that a good programme controller makes a good presenter. You need your ego to be kept in check, and you need someone to do that for you! For Christian, being a breakfast radio host is like being a king. ‘You have a team around you constantly making sure you’re happy. Praise is necessary but you also need to know when you’re drifting from what you should be doing and what your audience connects to’.
