Jonny Kanagasooriam is Head of Content Strategy for BBC Sounds. He and his team use data, editorial insight, and market intelligence to set on-demand speech & music commissioning strategies across BBC Radio & Music as well as for audio teams across the BBC (Nations, Regions, News, Children’s & Education, and World Service) to deliver a world-class slate of on-demand speech & music content that provides value for all UK listeners and increases the BBC’s audio reach and reputation globally. Previously he’s worked for a range of organisations across the creative industries including BBC Studios, fashion publisher Dazed Media, McCann London and Wunderman Thompson (formerly JWT London). He was BBC Clore Fellow in 2017/18 and is a trustee of The Whitechapel Gallery, Hofesh Schecter Company and The Donmar Warehouse theatre.
2023 opens a new era in the relationship between radio stations and third-party platforms. After years of observing each other and finding ways to work together, everyone is now asserting firmer positions. While some platforms seek to look more and more like radio, the broadcasting industry is beginning to free itself from certain third party players to cultivate its specificity and preserve its relationship with listeners. The European Broadcasting Union has a lot of insights and knowledge to share, and two public broadcasters will present their strategies when it comes to mastering their dance routines with very enticing platforms.
