From Mic to Camera: How Video is Shaping the Future of Podcasting

Podcasting is evolving, and video is leading the charge. But how do you actually make video work for your podcast? That’s what EMMA LAWSON (Digital Producer at ABC Australia) and DARBY DORRAS (Director of Content at Listen-UK) tackled in this session, moderated by AURA LINDEBERG (Executive Producer of News Audio at Yle). From low-fi setups to high-end productions, they shared what’s working, what isn’t, and how to create video content that really connects.

Emma gave us a peek behind the scenes at ABC’s approach. For low-cost, quick-turnaround content, they kept it simple—like “The Hook Up,” shot vertically on mobile phones with fast edits and meme-inspired moments. It was raw, relatable, and made to hook audiences. Then there’s “What’s That Rash?” (yes, really), recorded in radio studios with remote coordination to keep costs down while still testing audience interest. And for a polished touch, “If You’re Listening” was fully scripted and tailored for video, airing on a 24-hour news channel. The best part? Video didn’t steal the podcast audience—it expanded it. Emma’s big tip: optimize everything. Think catchy titles, standout thumbnails, and well-planned chapters.

Darby brought a UK perspective, where visual podcasting is pushing boundaries. From exclusive companion content on BBC platforms to long-form YouTube series and viral TikTok clips, it’s about blending formats and meeting audiences where they are. One standout? “Rivals”— a podcast that grew into a Disney+ show. Original content can stretch across platforms if you’re bold enough to let it. His key point? Know your audience and let your content evolve naturally.

The big takeaway? Video podcasting isn’t about just hitting record. It’s about crafting content that feels real, resonates with your audience, and finds its own rhythm across platforms. It’s creative, it’s messy, and it’s where the future is headed.
