Judith Whelan is Director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Regional and Local services, where she oversees the corporation’s eight capital city radio stations, 48 rural and regional bureaux as well as regional & local screen content. Judith is also responsible for sport across all of the ABC’s broadcast platforms and live events such as New Year’s Eve celebrations in Sydney and events marking Australia’s national holiday. The corporation’s emergency broadcasting responsibilities also fall under her remit.
Before being appointed as Director, Judith was the ABC’s Head of Specialist Content covering the Arts, Science, Health & Technology, Religion and Ethics, Education, Society and Culture as well as podcasting. Judith was formerly Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald. Her career in journalism spans more than 30 years during which time she has held positions as a news and feature writer, senior editor and a foreign correspondent in both the Pacific and Europe.
