The secret to a successful morning show, from those in the know

As the city wakes up, morning shows can truly set the mood of the day. In Greece particularly, radio prime time is in the morning, thus morning shows comprise an integral part of Greek people’s day. Maria Konstantaki from Easy 97.2, Miranda Smoulioti from Cosmoradio 95.1 and Alexandros Vachoritis from 96.9 Rock FM presented the key elements of hosting a strong morning radio show in their session “What Can We Learn from the Most Successful Greek Radio Shows?”

The most substantial component when it comes to hosting a morning show, is preparation. Solid programming ahead of schedule will allow the show to run smoothly, while still being open to anything that may emerge unexpectedly. Moreover, it is crucial for the show to be aligned with current affairs and up-to-date, in order to inform the listener on the spot. Above all, there has to be a level of consistency, first and foremost towards the identity of the radio station and secondarily, towards the audience.

The speakers shared some practical tips as well: not too many pauses in between words, clear voice, leaving room for each person to speak and overall having the “radio personality”, while remaining close to the average listener.

Then, the speakers revealed their favorite moments from their radio career. Maria Konstantaki had organized and participated in a marathon (“Maria’s Marathon”), with the goal of raising money and awareness about a greek charity organisation that helps children fighting cancer. Alexandros Vachoritis talked about his “controversial” campaign regarding the first time Black Friday came to Greece. Lastly, Miranda Smoulioti shared her memory of an on-air wedding proposal of en elderly couple.

Besides, one idea kept on circulating during the session: revolutionizing the idea of robotic perfectionism. Morning radio shows must be relevant, and in order to succeed this, the hosts should be authentic and true to themselves. As the speakers said: “Don’t be so perfect after all”.
