US Initiative: Mentoring & Inspiring Women in Radio

The Mentoring and Inspiring Women group was created in 1999, after the trade publication Radio Ink published its first like of the top 20 Most Influential Women in Radio in the United States. Rather than simply revelling in this honour, they gathered together in New York City to create the Mentoring and Inspiring Women group.

The group started with a number of initiatives, however they decided that the real issue was helping more women move into executive positions. Off the back of a Gender study to see how women were faring in executive positions on and off air in major radio. The organisation has since managed several mentoring programs, networking events, on-air and in programming, looking at ways of celebrating achievements of women in the industry.

Some of the most notable events include the Lipstick and Lobster dinner which started over 11 years ago and has grown into a successful networking occasion for MIW. This annual event is an opportunity for women in Radio together to celebrate the role they play in the industry.

In 2019, the MIW group is a volunteer organization lead by a Spokeswoman and Executive Committee who give their personal time and efforts to continue the Mentoring and Inspiring Women group core values.
