Radio producers need to take editorial responsibility. To take control. To make things happen. They are the organisers of the team. The front of the pack. Mistakes do happen, but when they do producers take the opportunity to establish what works and what doesn’t work.
Planning is of course important, but a good producer also knows it’s important to be able to throw those plans into the bin. When David Bowie died, Absolute Radio gave the day’s programming over to talking with listeners and sharing songs, anecdotes and emotions. Don’t overplan and don’t be afraid of going off piste. Everything you do is for the audience.
This really was a masterclass in production, and we came away equipped with tips and techniques from some of Europe’s best radio producers.
