Fresh strategy and creative thinking will keep radio reaching new audiences

A major point of discussion at Radio Days is the development of radio. Invited were Cilla Benkö, Swedish radio, Jean Philip De Tender from EBU, Guy Fränkel from the radio station Rock Antenne, Charles Emmanuel Bon from Radio France, and Matthias Pfaff from Regiocast.

In response to the opening question “What is the biggest change and challenge nowadays?”, the answers were similar and complementary: in addition to A.I., a major challenge is to further develop linear radio and maintain attention for it. Media libraries and on-demand offerings already form a large market.  Linear radio should be kept attractive for young people in particular. Too much screen time is dangerous for young people, radio can offer the same added value. “You need a strategy for your radio station,” says Guy Fränkel. Pfaff confirms this. Without a strategy, you don’t know where the program should go.  This strategy is also important for technology. The participants agree that technology should not be rejected, but it is important to explain technology to employees. Cilla Benkö recommends working closely with the people who develop the technology. Trends were also discussed. Benko points out that it is important to observe society and follow trends. And this is not a question of money: content creators can produce a lot without needing a lot of money. That’s how you can keep an audience. There are so many offers, if people want to talk about something, they take the platform, says Charles Bon. At the end, the Q&A session was also opened up to the audience. Among other things, the audience was interested in how radio can be described to young people and how events can give radio more presence. The last question was about what radio will look like in five years’ time: InSweden there is already a big change by making radio more mobile. In France, too, radio is to be made easier and the focus is to become cross-media. Pfaff adds that it is also important to bring employees together so that they feel like coming to work. Home office is possible and offers the opportunity to work from different locations. In Germany, most radio stations are large and hierarchical, this will turn into smaller radio stations and more collaboration.
