Liam Thompson has been working in radio since 1990 when he started on work experience in Century Radio under Mark Story. Since then, he’s worked for 98FM in various roles, RTE 2FM as Programme Manager, Launch Director / Programme Director for Spin 1038 and Group Programme Director for Communicorp.
As Group PD, between 2007 and 2014, he oversaw 42 stations in 9 different countries, including Ukraine, Finland, Hungary and more. He was also responsible for launching two new stations in Jordan, as part of a Middle East expansion.
He left Communicorp in 2014 to take up a role with Bauer UK as Content Director for Magic Radio, with a brief to improve its London numbers and prepare for a national launch onto DAB. After twelve months, the station was No. 1 in London and exceeded targets for its DAB launch.
He then moved to Wireless Group to launch Virgin Radio as a national brand on DAB. It launched in 2016 live from a moving train and again exceeded launch targets.
Liam returned to Ireland in mid-2017, working briefly with Wireless in Cork and then in 2018, set up his own consultancy, through which he’s worked with 98FM, iRadio, Galway Bay FM, Red FM, Fix FM in the UK and more.
He’s also co-founder of audio production company, Daft Doris, and co-created The Smart 7 Podcast which launched in April 2020 and has had 15 million downloads to date.
He’s currently Programme Director for Ireland’s only multi city station, Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio.
