Behind the Microphone: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

The “Behind the Microphone” panel at Radiodays Europe 2025 provided valuable insights into the evolution of the industry and the future of radio and digital audio platforms.

Joe D’Angelo from Xperi emphasized the competitive landscape, highlighting the vast reach and revenue of digital audio platforms compared to radio: “You have to appreciate the depth of wealth that those vertically integrated companies have and are deploying to get your listeners to tune in and listen to their products. It’s really, really a daunting task and I think we all have to keep that as a foundational understanding of the competitive environment you are in right now”.

Tobias Nielsen from Bauer Media Group highlighted the importance of having diverse content and distribution strategies, particularly in the connected car space: “IP allowed us to widen the content offering, which I think is extremely important for the business”.

Christian Schalt from RTL Radio Deutschland spoke about on the unique advantages of audio within RTL’s ecosystem, stressing the importance of data analytics: “We are able to detect a certain target group which might be heavy users of a TV show and seeing how these group converts into audio usage, which is quite a unique proposition in terms of data”.

Jason Bryant from Nation Broadcasting shared insights on leveraging digital platforms for audience engagement, revenue growth and collaboration with other broadcasters through the new Nation Player app: “We’ve now got nearly a hundred services as well as our own services on there. And we see this very much as best-in-class app provided by Xperi. And our listeners say it is been a game changer for them”.

The panel underscored the need for innovation, collaboration, and strategic investment in technology to stay competitive in the evolving audio landscape.
