Your new co-host, AI

Instead of talking about AI in theory, host Martin Liss discussed two cases of actual AI usage in the radio business with Erin Callaghan from Futuri Media and Jott Lischka from Radio Cloud.

Erin Callaghan from Futuri Media states that “the question is not should I use AI but how will I use AI?”. She points out that AI can help us “not to throw away hours of the radio”. The AI developed by her company can be used to automate the weather or local news, as well as to announce music by accessing a library containing trivia about songs and artists.

When implementing AI in broadcasting, “transparency is key”. Erin advises that not disclosing when hosts are AI turned out to be a mistake. Furthermore, she underlines the importance of rapport: “Having the team on board, helping them understand that they are not losing their job […] is critical”.

Jott Lischka explains the concept of Radio cloud, the first 100% cloud native, browser-based radio automation and content management and production platform. The experienced radio host explains how an 24/7 untouched AI generated and hosted radio show can work. Impressively, Radio cloud´s  show is hyper localized: An AI generates the songs that are the most streamed in 12 individual areas in Bavaria, and those songs are put into individual playlists. The AI on top writes the skripts for moderations and could also host. The advantages of that are that unpopular time slots are hosted, uncomfortable talking breaks of real hosts can be overplayed and the music can be individual. On top of that, it is all done in the radio cloud – you do not even have to install complicated software.

The role of AI in the radio world will increase, so it is crucial to stay tuned. In the end, we will not be replaced by AI, but by someone who knows how to use AI.
